Belgian Military Chef's Jacket, Folkwear 133, sloped shoulder adjustment

This Man is Muslin’d Out!

July 13, 2013by mainelydad12 Comments on This Man is Muslin’d Out!

I'm not sure that what I have to report today is really progress. A month ago I left off wondering if I should go ahead and do a sloped shoulder adjustment. The general concensus was that I should man-up and go for it. Since I don't have the contrasting fabric for the reverse of the [...]

Fitting the Belgian Chef’s Jacket

June 3, 2013by mainelydad5 Comments on Fitting the Belgian Chef’s Jacket

Contrary to public opinion, there has been some sewing going on here. I went ahead and made the men's size 40, and here's the result. As I mentioned previously, it went together easily. Please note: I have 1/2" shoulder pads pinned in for these photos. I think this pattern really demands them to look its [...]

Cooking up the Belgian Chef’s Jacket

May 20, 2013by mainelydad3 Comments on Cooking up the Belgian Chef’s Jacket

Bloggers, do you feel guilty when it's been a month since your last post? I do! The reality is that there really hasn't been much time for sewing. When I'm not out llama trekking with my son in the Smokey Mts.....I've started building a small sailboat. Don't ask! Anyway, today I decided to tackle the [...]

Tooting my own horn this morning. I received a great write-up in issue 78 of Simply Sewing Magazine, which is published in the UK. What a huge honor! The article also included a profile of @peterlappin , my sewing hero, and the menswear pattern company Thread Theory Designs. A huge Thank You to the staff of the magazine for reaching out to me from across the pond. I hope the readership finds the article inspiring; because as I often say, "If I can do this, anyone can!" #mainelydad , #mainelymenswear , #simplysewingmag , #imakemyownclothes , #sewover50 , #so50menswear , #so50men
Oy! Last month I took a video class with @tailoringacademy on men's trousers. This mess is the start of my journey from theory to actually drafting my own trousers. Even though this first attempt is destined for my "muslin graveyard", I'm determined to solve the puzzle of the man with straight hips and no butt. On to version #2. #mainelydad , #mainelymenswear , #waiwot , #mensweartailoring , #imakemyownclothes , #itsnotalwayspretty.
It's a waistcoat kind of Winter for this old man. They're the perfect extra layer when I'm working in my little studio. I love staying warm, while at the same time having my arms free. What took me so long! Lots more details on the blog as usual.
My snowy day project. It's time to put the whole waistcoat together. Gotta admit it's a mindbender, so I'm going slower than usual. #mainelydad , #mainelymenswear , #metrotextiles , #mensweartailoring , #waiwot , #laughingmoonpatterns, #laughingmoonmercantile , #thewinterofwaistcoats
Can a book change your approach to your projects? In my case, yes! I was preparing to sew up the back of my waistcoat when it struck me, I could do much better. So out came the silk organza! Underlining the back has given this waistcoat some much needed "omph". So worth the extra effort.
The Winter of waistcoats continues. I'm totally hooked on both making them and wearing them. They're the perfect extra layer. This time I'm using the shawl collar version from the Laughing Moon frock coat pattern. I've made this before (I won't say how many years ago) and love that the instructions include lots of traditional tailoring techniques, like a taped roll line for the collar. The fabric is a gorgeous red wool / camel hair from @metrotextiles that I ordered last Summer during Kashi's 50% off sale. Talk about affordable luxury! #mainelydad , #mainelymenswear , #isewmyownclothes ,#metrotextiles #so50shopsmallbusiness , #mensweartailoring
